This page is intended to provide some information and free resources to people preparing for English language Tests especially
TOEFL(test Of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS(International English Language Testing System). IELTS is required mainly
by Australian, Canadadian, Kiwi and British institutions while TOEFL is required mainly by American institutions.
About IELTS test
There are two types of tests(Modules):
- Academic Module
- General Training Module
You need to take only one module depending on requirement of the institution you are interested in.
But in general,
- The Academic Module assess whether a candidate is ready to study or work in the medium of English at an
undergraduate, postgraduate or professional level.
- General Training Module is suitable for candidates who are going to English speaking countries to complete
their secondary education, to undertake work experience or training programmes not at degree level, or for immigration
purposes to Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
Test Structure(Both Academic and General Training Modules)
- Total Test Time - 2 hours 45 minutes
- Listening - 4 sections, 40 items, 30 minutes
- Reading - 3 sections, 40 items, 60 minutes
- Writing - 2 tasks(150 and 250 words), 60 minutes
- Speaking - 11-14 minutes
The first three modules - Listening, Reading and Writing - must be completed in one day. The Speaking Module may be taken,
at the discretion of the test centre, in the period seven days before or after the other Modules.
Interpretation of tset Results
There are nine bands with 9 meaning Excellent and 0 meaning Did not take the test.Check which band is required by the institution you are interested in.
- Band 9 - Expert User
- Band 8 - Very Good User
- Band 7 - Good User
- Band 6 - Competent User
- Band 5 - Modest User
- Band 4 - Limited User
- Band 3 - Extremely Limited User
- Band 2 - Intermittent User
- Band 1 - Non User
- Band 0 - Did not attempt the test
